1. Before choosing your graduation project

Remember that the graduation project is not just a final course before your degree. It is the first work that carries your name as an architect, and the first thing any office, university or jury will ask you about. This is why choosing the project is the most important design decision you will make this year.

Many students start from the question: "What building do I want to design?" So they choose a museum, a tower or a resort because its form looks exciting. But strong projects, including those that win local and international competitions, start from a different question: "What real problem does this building solve? For whom? And where?"

When you start from the problem, everything becomes clearer:

  • the site has a reason,
  • the functional program becomes logical,
  • and the form is generated as a result, not as decoration.

Then you will be able to defend every decision in front of the jury, because behind every decision there is a clear reason.

↑ Back to contents

2. Questions to ask yourself before you decide

  1. Is the problem real?
Does it actually exist in a specific area of Jordan? Can you explain it in two sentences?
  2. Do you know who will use the building?
    Students? Workers? Visitors? Neighbourhood residents?
  3. Is the site real, and can you visit it?
A real site gives you information, opportunities and constraints that an imaginary site cannot give.
  4. Does the topic interest you personally?
You will live with this project for many months, and genuine interest shows in the quality of the work.
  5. Can you find enough information about it?
References, similar examples, data, and specialists you can ask.
  6. Is the size appropriate?
A very large project gets lost in generalities; a very small one is not suitable for a graduation project.
  7. What will your project add compared with similar projects?
A new idea, a different way of solving a known problem, or the revival of a neglected place.

Choose the project whose construction you can justify.

↑ Back to contents

3. Project topic and building type

The project topic is one thing; the building type is another.

For example, in the project "Centre of Excellence for Competency Development and Mining Capacity Building":

  • Topic: mining and phosphate, and the machinery and technology used in this field.
  • Building type: a training centre, because people come to it to learn and to be trained.

The project is therefore classified by its function: Educational & Training, with the topic added as a sub-category: Educational & Training – Mining Technology.

↑ Back to contents

4. Project categories by function (with examples)

Rule: classify the project by the main activity inside the building, not by its topic.

Note: if your project has a specific theme (technology, environment, heritage, mining…), write the main category by function and add the theme as a sub-category.

5. Which graduation projects win competitions?

Looking at winning projects, locally and internationally, they share several qualities:

  1. They solve a real problem in a specific place, such as desertification, a declining heritage site, or neglected land in the city.
  2. They rehabilitate what already exists (heritage, agricultural terraces, old structures) instead of building from scratch.
  3. Sustainability and climate are part of the project idea, not an addition at the end.
  4. A clear social impact: who benefits from the project, and how the place changes after it.
  5. Strong research and a clear story: a question, then analysis, then a solution, with a convincing visual presentation.

Award-winning projects from the Department of Architecture – University of Jordan

Graduation projects that won or were shortlisted in local and international competitions, supervised by Dr. Hasan Isawi.

1. First Place – iSUSTAIN Awards 2026

Project: Al-Makan – Community Center
Students: Layan Ahmad Zuhair Al-Hiari and Sara Al-Aarag

3. First Place – Jordan Engineers Association Architecture Graduation Projects Award 2021

Project: Amman Social Market "SOUQ" – "When the community owns the public space"
Student: Abdullah Adel Qamran
Supervisor: Dr. Hasan Isawi

The project addresses a real social and economic issue: the spread of informal street-stall markets ("random selling markets"). Its aim is to give stall sellers a suitable place to carry out their economic activity, within a public social plaza, similar to a popular market, that they feel is their own. It is a prototype project, because the idea is not tied to a single site: it can be applied to different sites similar to those the stall sellers choose. For this reason the project adopts a flexible architecture approach that adapts to different conditions.

The Architecture Graduation Projects Award is an annual national award organised by the Jordan Engineers Association. Its main aim is to introduce new graduates to architectural offices.

4. Long List – Tamayouz International Graduation Projects Award 2018

Project: Architecture of Refuge (Permanent Impermanence)
Students: Baraa Tareq and Ghada Al Tarter
Supervisor: Dr. Hasan Isawi

The main idea is to improve refugee camps and temporary settlements socially, architecturally, urbanistically and psychologically, through living units that adapt to people's changing needs, and a self-sufficient urban plan that responds to human needs and to the future challenges of the place. The project was applied to Zaatari Camp as a case study.

The Theory of Proportion in Architecture
